Support from the very top

Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP

Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

"There was a time when, for most people, Asian cuisine meant a post-pub Friday-night curry. But not anymore. Our high-end Asian restaurants have been instrumental in changing the perception of Indian and Asian cuisine and many have reached for and been awarded Michelin stars, proving the nation's favourite food is just as sophisticated as any other".

"This is an industry worth over £3 billion to the economy and we are fully committed to supporting British talent, all the way through from our favourite local curry houses and takeaways right up to our world-leading restaurants. We want to ensure employees have the right skills and that Britain remains one of the best places in the world for our chefs and managers to train"

"I'm pleased to support a fantastic initiative that celebrates the great contribution that the Asian cuisine sector plays in the UK's economic and cultural life. I believe that promoting the industry will help attract young people from different backgrounds to enter it.

When I first started out it wasn't easy but I had the fire in my belly to make it big. This is the attitude I hope to see in our young chefs who want to make into the top Asian restaurants.

I would encourage everyone, not only restaurateurs, but also rice suppliers and spices suppliers, to support this initiative to promote our industry, because their business also depends on the Asian restaurant trade.

The Asian Restaurant Skills Board are doing an admirable job in leading the industry. I believe that by coming together as employers and investing in our collective future, we can help ensure that this initiative will prove not only to be a success, but a great investment in our future".
